Do you want to know what it feels like to play with the chess pieces that Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky used to decide the World Chess Championship in Reykjavík in 1972?

The long-awaited encounter known as the match of the century was played at the insistence of the American Fischer with such high-quality Staunton pieces, hand-made by the Englishman Jaques of London. The white pieces are acacia and the black ebonized boxwood.

The two best players in the world statistics met in the tense atmosphere of the Cold War. The reign of the Soviet Union had already lasted 24 years. The pressure was increased by the postponement of the expected meeting. It was uncertain whether it would materialize at all.

Fischer did not attend the opening ceremony of the championship tournament. He had won all his matches in the challenger tournament by a record margin and finally arrived in Iceland as the early favorite. He had to win because a tie in the 24-game maximum streak would mean defending world champion Spassky would be allowed to retain his title.

Television audiences around the world gasped as Fischer lost the first game and refused to play the second in front of the cameras, giving Spassky a forfeit victory. However, the streak continued. Known for his specific openings, Fischer surprised Spassky by using a different opening in almost every game. He won the historic world championship with 12½-8½ and became a living chess legend.

With these chess pieces.
