Chess Pieces ZAGREB BLACK - Tournament Legend in Ebonized Boxwood

The pieces used in the greatest tournaments of the 1950s and 60s. Zagreb Black brings this history hand-carved from boxwood – with ebonized black that gives the pieces a timeless appearance.

  • Hand-carved from boxwood: light pieces in natural tones, dark pieces ebonized black
  • Weighted with iron: pieces feel stable and weigh correctly
  • Available in different sizes: find the right proportion for your board
  • Two extra queens: promotions handled seamlessly
  • Russian-style knight: curved, streamlined design stands out

History on the board

Zagreb pieces were present when the world's best players fought for the championship. The 1959 Candidates Tournament in Yugoslavia – in Bled, Belgrade, Zagreb – was played with these pieces. When you hold them, you touch the same design that was part of chess's golden age.

Russian craftsmanship, ebonized finish

The knight is carved in Russian tradition – curving lines, gentle streamlined form. Ebonized dark pieces aren't just black, they're deeply, evenly black. Light boxwood pieces create a contrast that's sharp yet warm. Minimalist aesthetic in other pieces lets the knight shine. The whole is balanced – not too detailed, not too simple. Just right.
